Web Hosting For Dummies
Someone recently asked about webhosting. Not in those words though, but rather something along the lines of “how do you receive a plain .com” blog instead of the blogspot behind your blog name. I tried to explain by telling him about hosting on your possess domain, and how it every works, but it was nice of useless. I’ve since tried to make it a bit simpler to explain to myself in plain terms exactly what ‘hosting’ means – trying to think what I would use if I had to give a comparison to something whic

Baseball for dummies
A definite highlight of my trip to Chicago last week was a visit to Wrigley Field to look a baseball game. My first ever such visit took me to the home of the Chicago Cubs to look them play the Baltimore Orioles. As you may imagine, an Englishman watching a baseball game in America without understanding it much - and which, to underscore my ignorance, I referred to as a ‘match’ - is a potential setup for some amusement, perhaps akin to the stuff we tend to dish out to visiting Americans about

Our Country 'Tis of Me
It's silly: If you look back over the years, my annual Fourth of July post has grown increasingly irritable. I would like to believe in this country again. There is much I've been proud about in the past. But we are losing what we once had, and that is nothing to be proud about. We used to sing "Our country 'tis of Thee." To be accurate, we should now be singing "Our country tis of ME." We were once a strong nation, composed of people who had seen nightmares and lived through them. Nightmares

sorting cksum output.
Hi guys, I have a service directory with a lot of files in. I have to cksum the whole directory and compare it to a release note document. However the problem I have is the files are listed in different lines when running cksum as they are in the release doc. Therefore cksum shows differences. The release note cksums are in a table in a work doc. I can clip and glue to a notepad and then glue into a file using vi. It creates different white space in the fields but I receive around this

Fence status - beginners problems!!
Hi, I'd like to try and capture a fence status from Maestro and move it to another file, but each time I try it fails. For example, when using Maestro (conman) I enter: status I then receive the fence status showing as 0 I then create a .dat file: touch statustest.dat If I then try to show this fence status in statustest.dat, it doesn't work...the file remains blank echo 'conman status' > statustest.dat I'm pretty new to this....any ideas? Thanks! Tim

Return shell value to a VI macro
Hi, Have searched around for a solution to this and receive frustrating close but have not nailed it. vi on HP-UX what I'm trying to do is utilise the key mapping available within Vi to run a shell script which uses awk script to scan the file i'm working on and return the line number or unique pattern (could go either way but the principle im trying to achieve is pass a value back so that vi macro can then utilise it) The closest ive got via Google is The most powerful macros, howev

I am doing a centos 5.1 kickstart install for a school project and was wondering if there is a way to install a custom desktop background image.(upon 1st time logging into system) (instead of showing the default centos desktop background, it would show a custom image) Would i have to create a post-install-script that'll change the background? Or is there an option in ks.cfg that I can edit to allow me to use a different background image?

deleting another user's files
hi, I have two users, let us call them A and B. I do as User A touch tmpfile chmod 700 tmpfile Now as User B I do rm tmpfile - and it allows me to do it (after prompting me)...why? If I had done chmod 777 tmpfile, then sure User B should be able to delete it, but I did chmod 700 tmpfile, so why was User B allowed to delete? Thanks.

The Democratic Party Dummies’ Guide on How to Appear Unpatriotic
The Democratic party needs a updated lesson in politics. I have never, ever seen anything such as what I have witnessed. I have only one recommendation, move away and separate the government policies and the military service of your opponent in your criticism, they don’t mix or belong in the grand scheme of things. It’s not a requirement for the position they are seeking to attain, and should be left out because there are hundreds of other issues that can be addressed that affect every the

The device plugs straight into the USB port and the software runs from the device. It has YouTube sharing and other video sharing services built directly into the software. This seems such an obvious way to do video properly, especially f
